Origin :

Patoleo is a popular traditional sweet prepared in Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Patoleo made specially during independence day, ganesh chaturthi festival and nagpanchami. Patoleo is made during the Feast of Assumption of Mary, the time to harvest the first corn crop. Konkan Maratha community and Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin prepare patoleos on the second sunday of Shravan, on Nag Panchami and on Hartalika, the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi . Salt free patoleos, are offered to Goddess Parvati, who according to a legend is said to have a strong craving for these sweets during her pregnancy.

Ingredients :

Serves for 4
For Patoleo
4-5 turmeric leaves 1.5 cup rice flour
For Stuffing
1.5 cup grated coconut1 tbsp ghee
1 tsp cardamom powder3/4 cup grated jaggery
Salt2 cups water

How to make Patoleo :

  1. Wash and clean the turmeric leaves.
  2. Boil the water. After boiling, add the rice flour and salt in parts and mix well with a spoon. After it absorbs all water, switch off the gas and let it cool.
  3. After cooling down a bit, take the dough on a plate and mix well.
  4. In a deep bottomed pot add ghee to it. Add grated coconut & jaggery, cardamom powder and salt. Stir for 3 mins till coconut and jaggery gets mixed. Switch off the gas. Let it cool.
  5. Now let us start making the patoleo.
  6. Keep a container filled with 1 cup water handy to dip the fingertips when they get sticky.
  7. On the front side of each turmeric leaf, spread a little rice paste thinly and evenly.
  8. Then place a little of the coconut mix in the centre and fold the leaf over pressing the edges firmly.
  9. Steam them in a steamer for 20 Minutes.
  10. Take time to smell the divine fragrance of steaming turmeric leaves.
  11. Enjoy these patoleo steaming hot.
