Authentic Kashmiri Tea: Kahwa
History and origin:
Kahwa is a Kashmiri tea flavored with cinnamon, cardamom, and saffron. Kahwa tea leaves are said to have come to Kashmir through the Spice Route. Many believed that it is originated in the Yarkand valley during the Kushan empire in the first and second century AD. Kahwa also has some medicinal properties and helps in improving immunity. Kahwa can soothe respiratory problems, cough, cold, and digestive issues.
Ingredients: for 2 serving
4 tsp Kashmiri green tea leaves | |||
1/4 saffron strands for garnishing | |||
I small pc cinnamon | |||
2 Cardamom slightly crushed | |||
2 cloves | |||
1/4 cup finely chopped almonds | |||
2 tsp sugar /jaggery /honey | |||
Few dried rose petals |
How to Make
- Heat 2 cups of water in a saucepan traditionally Kashmiri kahwa is made in a samovar a metal container.
- Add cinnamon stick, crushed Cardamom (Elaichi) and cloves.
- Boil it for few minutes.
- Add Kashmiri green tea leaves.
- In a cup add few strands of saffron in some water.
- Now add sugar for health benefits I would recommend to add some powdered jaggery or honey (don’t add honey in hot tea let it cool down for few minutes then add honey).
- Now in a cup add few strands of saffron in some water.
- Strain the tea in that cup.
- Finally add some chopped almonds and rose petals ,your Kashmiri kahwa is ready to serve.
