Bafauri : A Delight from Chhattisgarh

History :

Bafauri can be called a healthier version of fried Pakodas. This dish is originated from Chattisgarh, a state known for its beautiful temples and waterfalls. Chattisgarh is known as the ” Rice bowl of India ” as rice is the most eaten food of Chhattisgarh. People of this state are very fond of a protein-rich diet and eats a variety of lentils. They have a variety of dishes made of rice and dal. Today we thought of sharing one of the very famous healthy snacks called Bafauri.

Bafauri is a healthy snack made of chana dal mixed with a variety of spices and vegetables, very little oil is required that’s why we can call it a ” NO FAT DISH”

Ingredients:

1 cup chana dal ( Bengal gram dal ) soaked for 3-4 hours1/3 cup urad dal soaked separately for 3-4 hours
1 tsp green chilies paste1 tsp green chilies paste
1/2 cup finely chopped onions.1/4 tsp ajwain
1/2 tsp ginger garlic paste1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 cup finely chopped corianderSalt as per taste
Oil or ghee for greasing2 pinch baking soda (optional)

Method:

  1. Wash and soak chana and urad dal separately for 2 -3 hrs.
  2. Drain the water from both the dals and grind them separately to make thick paste.
  3. Now transfer the paste in a mixing bowl.
  4. Add ajwain seeds, salt ,turmeric powder and mix well.
  5. To this add to it green chilies paste ,chopped onion ,chopped coriander and ginger garlic paste and mix well to make it lump free.
  6. Now it’s time to add pinch of baking soda and keep it aside for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Mean while take a steamer plate and grease it with some oil or ghee ,i generally use idli cooker to make bafuri.
  8. Pour the batter in into the molds of idli cooker and steam them for 20-30 mins on low flame.
  9. once done demold the bafuri carefully .
  10. Enjoy it with green chutney or ketchup as a breakfast or a evening snack.
