Dal Pithi: Dish from Bihari cuisine

We can call it Bihari-style Pasta.

Dal pithi is a one-pot meal made with Dal and wheat flour mainly. It is a very easy dish as well as very healthy, also known as Dal ki Dulhan in Purvanchal, Uttar Pradesh is a wholesome meal that can be taken as a lunch or dinner. This is a heritage dish of Bihar. Here’s how you can make this easy recipe at home.

Ingredients :

Masoor dal soaked: 1 cupArhar dal soaked: 1 cup
1 medium-sized onion(finely chopped)2 medium-sized tomatoes (finely chopped)
Mustard seeds: 1 tspCumin seeds: 1 tsp
Hing: 1/2 tsp2 nos green chilies
Coriander leaves (finely chopped): 1/2 cup2 pc Bay leaf
Turmeric powder: 1 tspCoriander powder: 1 tsp
Chili powder: 1 tsp1 tsp garam masala
1 cup whole wheat flour1/2 cup water
2 tsp ghee2 tsp mustard oil
salt to taste

Method:

  1. Start making dough by mixing wheat flour with water ,salt and ghee.
  2. Make small similar-sized balls out of the dough.
  3. Roll the balls on the plain surface with the help of a roller, like a small chapati.
  4. Start folding from four corners to make a shape of a flower or like a dim sum. (You can make any other shape of your choice) Similarly, make with all dough and keep them aside.
  5. Dal is the next item we start to make
  6. In a pressure cooker put both the dals with water, salt, turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander powder.
  7. Pressure cook the dal for about 3-4 whistle.
  8. Wait for some time, remove the cooker lid and the dumplings to the dal.
  9. Time to add garam masala stir well and again close the lid, give it 2-3 whistles.
  10. Now take the tadka pan add oil, heat the oil.
  11. And now add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, hing, bay leaves sauté it for few seconds.
  12. Now add onions, sauté them, add tomatoes, Green chilies mix well.
  13. Add this tempering to the dal.
  14. Garnish it with some ghee and coriander leaves.
  15. Delicious and healthy dal pithi is ready, serve it hot( as dal gets thicker when it cools) in lunch or at dinner as it is very stomach filling.
