Haryali Chicken: A Nutritious & Mouth Watering Recipe
History and Origin of Haryali Chicken:
Haryali Chicken is originated from North India and it is the recipe of chicken made with mint, spinach cilantro, and some green chilies. North Indians mainly Kashmiris and Punjabis are the big fan of chicken, but every time making chicken with those common recipes made it very unhealthy and heavy to digest as most of the recipes of chicken are highly loaded with oil, spices, etc. In order to give chicken a healthy and nutritious twist the Kashmiri’s invented this recipe
Ingredients: For 2 servings
500 gm spinach (chopped) | 300 gms chicken |
1/2 cup mint chopped | 1 cup cilantro chopped |
1 cup tomato puree | 2 tsp ginger garlic paste |
4-5 green chilies | 4 onions (make a paste) |
2 tsp coriander powder | 1 tsp turmeric powder |
salt as per taste | 1 cup curd |
1 bay leaf | 1 tsp cumin seeds |
4 cloves | 1 tsp black pepper powder |
1 tsp chaat masala | 1 tsp garam masala |
2 tsp oil | unsalted butter |
Preparation:
- Wash Chicken properly.
- In a bowl add chicken, curd, ginger garlic paste, salt, black pepper powder and chaat masala, mix well and keep it for minimum half an hour.
- Wash spinach properly and boil it for a few mins and let it cool down.
- Grind boiled spinach with green chilies, mint and cilantro and make a fine paste.
- Now in a kadhai add oil cumin seeds, bay leaf, cloves , sauté well.
- Add onion paste, tomato puree, coriander powder, turmeric, salt and green paste and stir it well (Keep the quantity of salt in mind because we have added it in marinate also).
- Let the masala and paste cook for 5 min.
- Its time to add marinated chicken and mix well.
- Add some water and cover the lid, let it cook until chicken becomes tender.
- Sprinkle some garam masala and chaat masala.
- Mix and cook well so that gravy becomes medium thick.
- Last step is to add butter turn off the and cover the lid so that aroma of butter mixes up with the gravy.
- Garnish with some cilantro leaves.
- Serve hot with chapati or Naan ( Don’t forget to put Butter or ghee on the chapatis)

As we all know spinach is a great source of iron, so this dish is a good combination of protein and iron. Try to make it in an iron kadhai to increase the health benefits.
