Burmese Pathein Halwa
History and Origin of Pathein Halwa
The Pathein Halwa is a traditional Burmese dessert. There are two primary variants of the pudding, a wet one and a dry one, and the ingredients include glutinous rice flour, rice flour, coconut, sugar, poppy seeds, butter, and milk. The dessert was first sold in Bassein (now Pathein), a delta valley town in the 1930s. The dessert is considered a local delicacy today. The preparation of Pathein Halwa is similar to that of other Burmese desserts, such as mont kalame and htoe mont.
Ingredients of Pathein Halwa
4 tbsp. pure ghee | 1 tbsp. all purpose flour |
Semolina – 1 tbsp. | 2 tbsp. wheat flour |
8 almonds | 4 cashews chopped |
2 tbsp. gram flour | Chironji – 1 tsp. |
Raisins – 1 tsp. | Tutti fruity – 1 tsp. |
1 tsp. saffron soaked in water | Mixed seeds – 1 tsp. |
4 almonds sliced | 1/4 tsp. cardamom powder |
6 tsp. sugar | 1/3 cup water |
Steps
- Add 1 tablespoon of ghee to a saucepan and heat until melted. Roast wheat flour for 5 minutes on low heat. Take it off the plate and put it on a plate.
- Heat 1 tablespoon ghee and add Gram flour roast for 5 minutes in low flame. Take it off the plate and put it on a plate.
- Similarly add 1 tbsp. ghee and road all purpose flour for 5 minutes and remove it from the pan and place it onto a plate.
- Take 1 tbsp. spoon ghee in a saucepan and roast semolina for 5 minutes and remove it and place it onto a plate.
- Take a pan, heat water add saffron water, sugar dry fruit and cardamom powder, mix and boil.
- You can now mix the roasted wheat, besan, and semolina together. Stir until the ghee separates.
- Serve burma halwa garnished with sliced almonds, tutti fruity, cashews, mixed seeds and pieces of chironjee.
Health Factor
The Ayurvedic tradition claims that ghee can improve memory, slow down ageing, and even improve immunity. Moreover, it relieves aches and pains by lubricating bone joints. Pathein Halwa also contains dry fruits like cashews and raisins, which are rich in antioxidants and protein.
